“Grigoris Afxentiou’s last hours in the burning cave”.
The poem “Apoxairetismos” was written by the Greek poet Giannis Ritsos in March 1957, when the sacrifice of the hero and deputy commander of EOKA was still in the memory of all the Greeks as it was something that shocked the whole world.
It is referred to a fantastic monologue that the hero has some hours or even minutes before his holocaust. In his monologue, he says goodbye to the world, his homeland and his life. With inner peace and self-control the hero brings back memories of his life, philosophizes important topics and explains how and why he was in that cave.
